Shortening or oil (may be left over from making chicken fried steak)

There should be at least 1/2 cup of melted shortening in skillet left over from cooking chicken fried steak. If not, add more.
Turn electric skillet up to 400 degrees. Add flour and stir quickly with a fork until it is dissolved. Let it brown at least 5 minutes. The longer it browns, the darker the gravy.
Add water and immediately reduce heat to "warm" setting.
Gravy will quickly thicken. Add more water to desired consistency.
Add at least 1-1/2 to 2 teaspoons salt or to desired taste. Pepper to taste.
Pour over chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes.
